Let Food Companies Know That Animal Cloning is Tasteless

Update: Smithfield Foods, a leading U.S. pig producer, has joined the growing list of companies promising not to clone animals for food! Thank you to all who sent letters to Smithfield asking the company to oppose animal cloning.

Recently, we reported on the overwhelming number of comments that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received from AAVS and concerned citizens like you adamantly opposing animal cloning.

The comment period has closed, and the FDA is now reviewing the comments it received. AAVS, meanwhile, is continuing to move forward with our campaign to end animal cloning by encouraging consumers to voice their concerns to the food industry.

Several food companies, particularly in the dairy industry, have already expressed objections to introducing cloned products into the food supply based on concerns they have received from consumers.

Kraft Foods Global, Inc. (Kraft), for example, well-known for its line of cheeses, Oscar Mayer meat products, and packaged foods, has asked the FDA to maintain the moratorium on animal cloning until all relevant concerns have been examined and resolved. According to comments filed with the FDA, Kraft is also considering asking its suppliers about "their ability to provide us with raw materials that are not from cloned animals or their progeny."

However, there are many other companies that have not yet taken a public position on animal cloning. Tyson Foods is just one such company, and as the world's largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork, Tyson would have a significant impact if it declared that it would not use cloned animals or their offspring.

Companies cannot be responsive to consumers' needs if they do not know what they are. While all animals raised for food are subject to cruelty, cloning raises the suffering to an unprecedented level.

It is time for consumers to speak with a united voice and let the food industry know that animal cloning is a cruel experiment and that we do not want cloned foods in our grocery stores or restaurants.

What You Can Do:
Please contact the companies at the right and let them know that you do not want food from cloned animals to be on the market.
